  1. NOVELL HELPS FORM PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR CERTIFIED NETWARE

  4. January 9, 1991 -- Provo, UT -- Novell Inc. (NASDAQ:NOVL), developer of
  5. NetWare systems software products, Wednesday announced the formation of
  6. the Certified NetWare Engineer Professional Association (CNEPA), a
  7. national non-profit organization that gives the growing number of
  8. Certified NetWare Engineers a forum to exchange technical information on
  9. managing Novell networks.

  11. "As NetWare's popularity grows, the CNEs who manage those networks have
  12. become critical personnel in many companies," said Carolyn Rose, Novell's
  13. director of education.  "The CNEPA is intended to provide the structure
  14. for CNEs to exchange information, discuss problems and work together to
  15. arrive at solutions.  This will have obvious and immediate benefits for
  16. all NetWare users, since the people responsible for keeping their
  17. networks up and running will have an important new way to access the
  18. collective wisdom of thousands of their peers across the country."  CNEs
  19. are currently in touch electronically via NetWire, Novell's online
  20. information service, and through Novell's Technical Information Database
  21. (TIDB).

  23. "Novell also stands to gain by tapping into the experience of the CNEPA,"
  24. Rose added.  "The association provides us with another vital link to our
  25. customer base and should be instrumental in helping us build products
  26. that respond to the evolving needs of our users."

  28. CNEPA is incorporated in Utah and has established local chapters in major
  29. cities throughout the United States.  The association is governed by a
  30. five-member board of directors, four of whom represent types of major
  31. organizations that employ CNEs.  These organizations include:

  33.      o    Fortune 500 companies with 10 to 50 CNEs on staff
  34.      o    Smaller corporations with one to 10 CNEs
  35.      o    Certified NetWare Instructors working with Novell Authorized
  36.           Education Centers (NAECs)
  37.      o    Network consulting firms

  39. The fifth seat is occupied by Novell's CNE program manager. Initially,
  40. directors will hold office for two years.  As the organization matures,
  41. directors will serve single-year terms.

  43. The CNEPA will schedule frequent meetings at regional sites, as well as
  44. an annual conference for all members.  It will also publish a monthly
  45. newsletter, sponsor seminars and participate in computer tradeshows.
  46. Additional plans call for developing an instructional tape library and
  47. establishing an independent database to consolidate the knowledge
  48. acquired by CNEs worldwide. Certified NetWare Engineers
  49.  
  50. CNEs are technical specialists certified by Novell to install and
  51. maintain NetWare networks.  Novell established the CNE program in 1988 to
  52. assure customers that NetWare products are supported capably in the
  53. field.  The eight core CNE requirement categories range from small
  54. systems administration to advanced data communications, and include
  55. extensive hands-on training.

  57. There are currently more than 3,200 CNEs worldwide, with another 100 per
  58. week gaining certification.  Novell anticipates the need for an
  59. additional three to four thousand CNEs in the United States alone over
  60. the next year as U.S. resellers move to meet Novell's increased technical
  61. proficiency requirements.  Novell resellers are stratified into three
  62. levels: Platinum, Gold and Authorized, with Platinums requiring the most
  63. in-house technical expertise because they sell Novell's most
  64. sophisticated products and serve complex systems environments.  The
  65. stratification plan calls for Platinums to employ a minimum of two CNEs
  66. at each branch office, while Golds must have at least one at each site.

  69. control the sharing of data across a variety of network computing
  70. environments, including computer departmental networks and business-wide
  71. information systems.
